The Intersection of Tradition and Modernity: A Glimpse at Global Art in Milan
During my recent visit to Milan, Italy, for the Expo Metro Milan exhibition, I was deeply moved by the power of art and the charm of culture. The exhibition was held in the heart of Milan, surrounded by ancient and captivating architecture, immersing me in Italy’s rich historical and cultural heritage. Upon entering the venue, I was immediately struck by the massive LED display walls. This fusion of modern technology and art was refreshing, as the exhibits not only stood as static pieces but acted as mediums of dialogue with the audience, drawing me in to savor each one.

Italian artist Salvatore Trupia’s Metamorfosi stood out for its use of photography and transformation to create visual art that made spaces more refined, delivering a sense of surprise. Trupia not only captured moments but also infused his works with vitality and imagination through clever composition and change. This unique visual experience enhanced the aesthetic value of the space while offering an immersive experience, as though witnessing objects morph and shift in real-time, adding an artistic touch to everyday life.

United Kingdom artist Muriel Lherm’s Cosmic Contemplation, created using AI technology, is a thought-provoking piece that explores the relationship between humanity and the universe through a unique digital language. This work evokes a blend of knowledge and mystery. By using AI, the piece transcends the limitations of traditional art, instilling a sense of futurism and provoking deep reflections on the fusion of technology and nature. The mysterious aura of the work arises from its blurring of the boundaries between reality and the virtual, the known and the unknown, stimulating contemplation on the infinite mysteries of the cosmos.

Chen Meng-Huan’s Serendipity and Growth immediately caught my attention. Initially, I thought this was a Japanese piece due to its style, but to my surprise, it was the work of a Taiwanese artist, created using traditional Chinese ink painting. The piece masterfully uses the interplay of light and space to highlight the contrast between black and white, symbolizing the connections we encounter in life. I saw the resilience of plants thriving in darkness, reminding us that even in adversity, there is always a ray of hope.

French artist Kamila Bouaziz’s La Demoiselle uses simple lines to outline the form of a young woman, demonstrating the artist’s adept skill with linework and profound understanding of the female figure. In this work, Bouaziz strips away complex details, employing minimalist strokes to elegantly depict the girl’s posture. Each line conveys emotion, balancing simplicity and sophistication. This approach not only aligns with modern art but also focuses attention on the girl’s expression, enhancing the piece’s emotional depth.

Taiwanese artist Wu Li-Ying’s Prosperous Peonies showcases the unique charm of traditional Chinese painting. In Chinese culture, the peony symbolizes prosperity, and in this piece, Wu’s use of vibrant colors and fluid brushstrokes brings each bloom to life, as if the petals are in full bloom, radiating joy and abundance. The flowers exude confidence and grace, conveying a sense of luxury. It became clear to me why the peony holds such significance as a symbol of good fortune in Chinese culture.

Another Taiwanese artist, WU PEI CHI, impressed me with his Thousand Character Classic in Hard-Nib Calligraphy. Unlike traditional Chinese calligraphy, Wu’s work uses a modern hard-nib pen. His complete work contains one thousand unique Chinese characters, demonstrating his deep affection for the art of Chinese script. Each character feels like a tribute to culture, using the written word to convey Eastern traditions to the audience. In this digital age, Wu’s work serves as a reminder that writing is not only a communication tool but also a vessel for cultural preservation.
This exhibition, brimming with creativity and inspiration, featured outstanding artists from around the world, highlighting the globalization of art and the fusion of cultures. Artists from diverse backgrounds, including musicians, filmmakers, photographers, and painters, collaborated across disciplines, revealing the essence of art’s borderless nature.
The event, featuring 416 artists, particularly those from Taiwan, energized me about the rise of Asian art on the international stage. Here, art transcends being mere works; it acts as a bridge of dialogue, connecting different cultures and fostering mutual understanding. As I left the exhibition, I felt an invisible force compelling me to continue exploring the beauty and mysteries of this world.
Finally, attending the Expo Metro Milan left me with a profound appreciation for the rise and prominence of Asian artists on the global art stage. Their works not only displayed technical mastery but also delved deeply into the relationships between life, nature, and culture. This exhibition was not just a visual feast but also a spiritual journey, broadening my understanding of art and culture.Event website: https://expometro.co/en/exhibition/2024-milan
